SKOWHEGAN — Three area people arrested in a February drug raid after the search of a Palmyra home have been indicted by a Somerset County grand jury.

Kevin A. Cookson, 56, of Newport; Melissa J. Collamore, 49, of Palmyra; and Eric E. Hamilton, 45, of Palmyra, are charged with aggravated trafficking and possession of scheduled drugs, according to the indictment, delivered by the grand jury on Tuesday. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Feb. 26 in Palmyra. At the time, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster called it one of the largest heroin seizures in the county in recent years.

Lancaster said at the time that the amount of heroin seized from the residence had a street value of up to $84,000. The drugs were seized after a search by Somerset County deputies of Collamore’s residence at 81 Ell Hill Road. Lancaster said the search turned up about 10 ounces of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, hashish, assorted controlled pills, drug-related paraphernalia, drug-related documentation and $1,090.

The seized heroin was the equivalent of about 2,800 bags, or individual doses, which are sold commonly for $25 to $40 per bag on the street, the release said.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but is an indication and enough evidence is present in a case to proceed with trial.

Also indicted by the grand jury were:

• Wilfred Gordon, 49, of Skowhegan, charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, Jan. 4 in Skowhegan.

A Franklin County man has been arrested after an investigation into a report of a sex crime at a residence in Industry.

Timothy Haley, 36, of Freeman Township, was arrested Thursday on charges of unlawful sexual contact, class B, and unlawful sexual touching, class D.

On March 15 it was reported to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office that Haley allegedly was “acting inappropriately with underage children,” according to a news release Friday from Sheriff Scott Nichols.

Detective Ken Charles alerted the Department of Health and Human Services about the incident, which reportedly occurred at an Industry Road residence.

Haley had connections with the residents of the Industry Road home, according to Nichols. The children that Haley allegedly had the unlawful sexual contact with lived at the home.

After conducting multiple interviews and forensic interviews with the victims, Charles interviewed Haley and arrested him Thursday at the sheriff’s office.

Canaan fire that killed seven pets was arson, fire marshal says

$

A fire that killed four dogs and three cats at a Canaan mobile home in September and displaced two men who lived there was arson, the state fire marshal’s office said Friday.

Aldo Baldie and his husband, Ron Pelletier, were at a celebration for a friend in Alcoholics Anonymous at the time of the fire Sept. 21 and came home to find flames shooting out of their mobile home at 289 Browns Corner Road.

Matthew Short, 30, of Canaan, was arrested Friday in connection with the fire and charged with arson, burglary and aggravated cruelty to animals, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland.

Short allegedly entered the home before setting the house on fire, but did not take anything, and “it’s hard to believe he didn’t know the animals were inside since there were seven of them,” he said.

Authorities have not said how the fire was started and its specific cause remains under investigation, McCausland said.

Short lives at 759 Browns Corner Road, and while he knew of Baldie and Pelletier, McCausland said he was not sure how well they knew each other. “We’re still putting that together,” he said.

Short’s girlfriend, Sheena Moshier, 30, also was arrested Friday on unrelated charges of forgery, negotiating a worthless instrument and traffic offenses.

Both were taken to the Somerset County Jail. Short is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and probably will make a court appearance Monday, according to the release. Moshier’s bail was set at $2,000.

Baldie and Pelletier were renting the Browns Corner Road mobile home and had moved in about a month before the fire.

Baldie, a former hairdresser, was out of work at the time of the fire. Pelletier is retired. Their pets included three Maine coon and Siamese mixed cats named Queeny, Miss America and Princess Hootie.

The dogs included two long-haired Chihuahuas, Susie and Chiquita; and a dingo, Chowie.

The day after the fire, Baldie, speaking from a hotel room in Skowhegan, said he was heartbroken over the loss of the animals and talked about a photo of the cats he had taken recently.

“I would say, ‘OK now, smile, cats. I’m taking a picture,’ and they would group up on the bed. I got all three of them,” he said. “I don’t have the heart to take it off my phone.”

Homeless man arrested after applying for Skowhegan pub job, then allegedly pulling knife

SKOWHEGAN — A Lewiston man staying at a local homeless shelter was arrested Thursday after allegedly threatening a bar owner with a knife after he applied for a job, asked for a beer and was denied service because he had no money.

Kenneth Ouellette, 47, was arrested Friday and charged with criminal threatening, said Detective Sgt. Josh King, of the Skowhegan Police Department.

Eric Dore, owner of the Old Mill Pub, said Ouellette regularly comes into the Water Street restaurant and the staff normally gives him food and water, although he often cannot pay.

On Thursday, Ouellette filled out an application for a job at the pub, Dore said. When Ouellette emptied the contents of his pocket onto the bar, Dore saw he had a knife. Ouellete asked for a beer, but Dore denied the request because Ouellete had no money to pay for it.

“He was harmless up to that day,” Dore said. “I offered him something to eat, but he said he wanted a beer and got upset because we denied him a beer since he had no money.”

Ouellette then left the restaurant but returned about an hour later, and Dore said he started threatening him outside.

“He said he couldn’t confirm I was the owner and he didn’t believe I was,” Dore said. He asked Ouellette to stay out of the restaurant because he knew Ouellette had a knife and feared he would use it, he said.

Dore said Ouellette said he would go into the restaurant, then pulled the knife out, threatening Dore.

“He took the blade out and pointed it right at me and started coming at me,” Dore said. “He seemed to have every intention of using it.”

Dore called 911 and said Ouellette threw the knife into the Kennebec River when he heard him on the phone giving police a description of him.

“The response time by the police was great,” Dore said. “They came within minutes of my call. Because of the Skowhegan Police Department, a potentially dangerous issue was resolved, and I thank them for that.”

The charge is a felony because of use of a weapon, King said.

Ouellette was staying at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church men’s shelter at the time of his arrest.

The suspect charged in the November 2015 robbery of Trademark Federal Credit Union in Augusta has died.

A spokesman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Friday that the cause of death of Jaime S. Morrill, 43, of Randolph, was suicide by hanging. He was free on bail at the time.

State charges of robbery and theft against Morrill were dismissed this week.

When he was arrested in late December, Morrill told police he had been down to his last $2 when he robbed the credit union on Edison Drive.

The robbery occurred Nov. 24, and no weapons were shown.

Gardiner man sentenced on child pornography charge

AUGUSTA — A Gardiner man was sentenced Thursday to a serve an initial six months behind bars after he was convicted of possession of sexually explicit materials of minors under age 12.

Barry S. Williams, 61, had pleaded guilty previously to the charge at the Capital Judicial Center with a one-year cap on the initial amount of jail time. The remainder of the three-year jail term was suspended, and he was placed on two years probation.

In exchange for his plea, the state dismissed a charge of dissemination of sexually explicit materials of minors under 12.

According to the indictment, Williams had the material May 22-July 14, 2014, in Gardiner.

He also forfeited a computer and a hard drive that had been seized by police investigating the case.

Justice Joseph Jabar imposed conditions of probation that prohibit Williams from use or possession of devices capable of Internet access and order him to submit to random search and testing for sexually oriented material.

As a result of the conviction, Williams must register for the next 25 years under the state Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Frayla Schoenfeld Tarpinian, had asked Jabar to give Williams a full year behind bars.

“He has intentionally downloaded images of young girls 8-15 for purposes of sexual gratification,” she said.

The prosecutor said 363 images had been downloaded, but not all of those were child pornography.

Defense attorney Darrick Banda had sought less initial jail time for his client. Banda said Williams had no prior criminal record, and that a defendant in a similar case with a similar underlying sentence was ordered to serve an initial 60 days.

Letters supporting Williams were submitted to the court in connection with the case, but there were no other spectators in the courtroom.

State police arrested the youth pastor of a Canaan church Friday evening and charged him with sexual abuse of a young girl, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

Detectives have charged Lucas Savage, 37, of Clinton with unlawful sexual contact, McCausland said in a news release. Savage, the youth pastor of Canaan Calvary Church, was arrested in Mercer and taken to the Kennebec County jail.

Detectives said the abuse took place at Savage’s home on Mutton Lane in Clinton. State police have been investigating the allegations for the past month. Detectives do not know whether there are additional victims, and their investigation will remain open.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact state police in Augusta at 800-452-4664.

Fire on Trafton Road in Oakland was arson

A fire that destroyed a mobile home on Trafton Road in Oakland Saturday was arson, the Office of State Fire Marshal has determined.

“It’s considered an intentionally set fire,” Sgt. Ken Grimes of the Fire Marshal’s Office said Monday.

Firefighters from several towns fought the fire Saturday at 431 Trafton Road. The homeowners, Ted and Jean Brown, are away for the winter.

The fire was reported at 3:30 p.m. Firefighters battled the blaze in cold temperatures made more bitter by high wind.

Oakland Fire Chief David Coughlin said at the scene Saturday that it appeared the fire started outside the home and “it didn’t look right.”

Grimes on Monday said he could not reveal details about exactly where the fire was set or what was used to start it.

“We’re not going to get into the specifics of where and how,” Grimes said, adding that fire officials are still working on the case. “It’s a residence where the seasonal home owners were living out of state at the time.”

Coughlin called state fire investigators in to help determine the cause of the fire, and those investigators worked at the scene until about 9 p.m. Saturday, he said. Coughlin said over the weekend that the last time a member of the Brown family was at the mobile home was about a week ago.

About 35 firefighters from Oakland, Rome, Belgrade, Sidney and Fairfield worked at the scene, and Waterville firefighters brought a cascade truck containing air for firefighter air bottles.

The mobile home was insured, according to Coughlin. Firefighters were able to salvage some family items from the mobile home, including rifles, snowshoes and framed pictures.

Grimes asked those who may have seen or heard anything related to the fire to contact the state fire marshal’s office at 626-3870. After hours, they may call Maine State Police regional dispatch center at 624-7076, or if someone wants to leave an anonymous tip, he or she may call the arson hotline at 1-888-870-6162.
