Waterville police say woman robbed man’s apartment, held him at knifepoint

WATERVILLE — Two women who allegedly held knives to a man’s throat while they searched his apartment for drugs and money are in jail and charged with robbery, as part of a tangled story that involves another man who at last check was in critical condition at a Portland hospital.

The sequence of events started at 12:32 a.m. Saturday when police and emergency crews responded to a report of an unresponsive man at Appleton Apartments at 13 Hathaway St. The man was reportedly a visitor to an apartment there.

Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey, of the Waterville police, said Thursday that the man was taken to the Thayer Center for Health and later flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

On Tuesday, Detective Duane Cloutier interviewed another man who lives at the apartment. The man told Cloutier that at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, the day after the man was taken away, two women who had been at the apartment during the medical incident returned and robbed him.

The women, Alison Thomas, 36, of, 7 Hazelwood Ave., Apartment 3, and Laurie Philbrick, 41, of 24 Eastern Ave., grabbed knives from a butcher’s block in the apartment and held them to his throat, demanding he give them drugs and money that they believed were in the apartment, according to Rumsey.

“He denied having possession of any drugs or money,” Rumsey said. “One of the women apparently kept him at knife point for some time while the other searched the apartment.” He said when they could not find any drugs or money, they stole bags of clothing belonging to the man who had suffered the medical emergency.

Detectives investigated the case Tuesday and Wednesday and tried to find the women. On Wednesday, they found Philbrick at her home on Eastern Avenue and arrested her on charges of one count of class A felony robbery and one count of class C felony criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, Rumsey said. Her bail was set at $6,000 cash and she was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta. She is scheduled to appear April 25 in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Detectives still were looking for Thomas when at 12:55 a.m. Thursday patrol officers went to 7 King St. in the city’s South End in response to a report of someone in the basement of a home. Police met with the tenant, who reported hearing someone screaming and yelling in the basement, Rumsey said.

“Our officers went around to the back of the house to the bulkhead door, went down it and opened the door that leads into the basement,” he said.

A woman later identified as Thomas, who Rumsey said was extremely intoxicated, ran out of the basement with dried blood on her face and smelling of intoxicants, Rumsey said.

She told police she had been dragged into the basement and chained to a wall, but police checked the basement and determined that did not happen, Rumsey said.

Meanwhile, she refused to identify herself, but Sgt. Brian Gardiner recognized her, so they arrested her and charged her with robbery and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. She was taken to a hospital and medically cleared before being taken to the jail in Augusta, where bail was set at $6,000 cash. Her court date was set for April 25 in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Rumsey said she had a broken pinky finger, scrapes on her nose and a mouth injury that police believe occurred because she fell down before they arrived.

Police are not naming the man who rents the apartment or the man who was found unconscious, as they have not been charged with a crime, Rumsey said.

“The last we knew, he was in critical condition,” Rumsey said of the man hospitalized in Portland. “We have not been able to substantiate that his medical condition was due to a drug overdose.”

He said the man is in his early 40s and lives in the Waterville area. Rumsey said police think drugs and money were in the Hathaway Street apartment before emergency officials went to the apartment Saturday to deal with the unresponsive man.

“Based on our investigation, we suspect that earlier in the night, there had been a large quantity of drugs at the residence, so these two women went there in an attempt, we believe, to steal those drugs and money we think may have been there as a result of illegal drug dealing,” he said.

He said police believe the drug was heroin.

The man who rents the apartment was not injured in the robbery — which police describe as use of force in the commission of a theft — but feared for his life, according to Rumsey.

Police raid Norridgewock fracas Wednesday night

Six police officers from three agencies descended on a raucous party that turned into a big fight Wednesday night in Norridgewock after complaints of noise and vandalism, police said Thursday.

Deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department and the Fairfield and Skowhegan police departments were sent to Dodling Road, Smithfield Road, which is Route 8, about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“This was a report of a large party that was getting out of control, involving reports of multiple fights and vandalism to vehicles there,” said James Ross, chief deputy at the sheriff’s office. “Fairfield PD provided mutual aid by backing up Somerset deputies. Skowhegan police also provided assistance.”

No arrests were made at the time, but the brawl, which went on past 1 a.m. Thursday, remains under investigation, Ross said. He said the people involved appeared to be in their early to mid-20s.

Ross said there was a broken windshield and a broken taillight on vehicles at the scene. It also appeared that underage drinking was going on, but “because of everything going on at once, no one was able to be charged as people left the scene.”

Kingfield man charged with stealing from elderly relative

A Kingfield man arrested in August for forging checks belonging to a 94-year-old neighbor was arrested again Tuesday on a similar charge involving an elderly relative.

Brent Adams, 42, was arrested and charged with felony counts of forgery and theft by deception Tuesday.

Adams was charged with two class C counts of forgery in August after a neighbor in Phillips, where he was living at the time, called police to report a discrepancy in her checkbook after noticing two checks were missing, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said at the time.

In the most recent case, Adams is charged with forging a 90-year-old relative’s name and stealing about $76,000, The Associated Press reported.

In the August case, the neighbor was a “big hearted person” who was trying to help Adams, Nichols said. The value of the two checks was $110; but Adams, who Nichols said blamed his action on drug addiction, has a history of similar crimes, so the charges were elevated, Nichols said.

People can protect themselves from fraud and theft by safeguarding their valuables, including prescription pills, blank checks and credit cards and using due diligence to make sure they are not being taken advantage of, Nichols said.

Police nab suspect in store robbery attempt

Augusta police arrested a 27-year-old transient Thursday in connection with an attempted robbery Saturday at the Augusta Quick Mart on Western Avenue.

Detectives, having received information from the public, were able to identify Corey Ross Swift as the suspect they were seeking, and patrol officers found and arrested him Thursday, according to a police news release.

Swift is being held at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

The attempted robbery was reported at 6:15 p.m. Saturday after a white man, described as 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, entered the store, demanded money from the clerk and threatened to use a gun. The suspect never displayed the firearm and left the store after he was unable to obtain any money, police said.

Augusta police a state police dog team searched the area but were unable to find the suspect that evening.

Augusta robbery suspect was convicted previously of felony murder

AUGUSTA — The suspect in a March 5 robbery of a city convenience store is the same man convicted of felony murder in the April 24, 2007, shooting death of Franco-American singer Jean-Paul Poulain.

Corey Ross Swift, 27, whose address is listed as “transient” by police, was arrested Thursday on the robbery charge.

He had an initial hearing Friday at the Capital Judicial Center via video from the Kennebec County jail.

Judge Evert Fowle ordered Swift held in lieu of $20,000 bail, an amount requested by Assistant Attorney District Attorney Carrie James.

Swift could be seen on a courtroom television monitor.

He had a colorful tattoo on his right arm and right shoulder that was partly covered by an orange jail uniform.

James said the felony murder conviction was the extent of Swift’s criminal record.

Attorney David Geller, acting as lawyer of the day, waived arguing bail and asked that it be reviewable once counsel is appointed for Swift.

James, in arguing for conditions preventing Swift from using alcohol and illegal drugs while he was on bail, said she had information that Swift committed the robbery because he was “dope sick” and that a family member indicated Swift was using heroin.

The judge imposed those conditions.

Swift was 18 when he was charged in the killing of Poulain, which occurred in Poulain’s apartment on School Street in Augusta. Poulain, 62, lived long enough in the ambulance to identify the men who shot him. The triggerman was Mathew Loisel, then 21, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Swift pleaded guilty to felony murder, indicating that he participated in a felony –– robbery –– that resulted in a death and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Records of the state Department of Corrections indicate he was discharged from prison on Aug. 31, 2015. Swift had spent time in jail on that charge before his sentencing and he earned “meritorious good time” in prison under the state’s 2004 code.

According to Jody Breton, deputy commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Swift came into custody Jan. 30, 2008, and was discharged Aug. 31, 2015, from Charleston Correctional Facility.

Breton said via email that Swift would have earned good time under the 2004 code.

“Prisoners under this code earn seven days a month — three for work/programing and four for conduct. Prisoners can also earn an additional two days a month for any community-based programing during their last three years of incarceration.”

She said that initial notes indicated he was released Aug. 28, but later she saw records indicating it was actually Aug. 31.

In the March 5 robbery of the Augusta Quick Mart on Western Avenue, the suspect threatened but never displayed a firearm and left the store after he was unable to obtain any money, police said.

Swift was identified as a suspect after Augusta police released images of the robbery from surveillance cameras and then received tips from the public.

Somerset County inundated with IRS scam calls

$

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to warn residents about a statewide telephone scam in which the caller says he’s from the Internal Revenue Service and tells recipients they must pay money they owe over the phone or face arrest.

“It is absolutely a scam and for whatever reason this area in Somerset County is getting targeted pretty heavily right now,” Chief Deputy James Ross said. On Thursday and Friday, the sheriff’s office received a total of more than 20 reports of phone scams, many of them in Fairfield, according to police dispatch logs.

In February, the Maine attorney general’s office reported a spike in the number of incidents of a scam that purports to be the Internal Revenue Service calling to demand payment. The calls involve either a live person or an automated voice telling call recipients that they owe taxes and the IRS will sue them, have them deported, take away their driver’s licenses or shut down their business if they don’t pay the taxes immediately over the phone with a credit card.

Ross said the calls are a scam and that anyone who receives them should just hang up.

He said he thinks the calls are being made by someone outside of Maine and that he did not know of anyone in the area who has lost any money through the scam.

In addition, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office also recently dealt with a scam complaint in which the victim was told that someone the victim knows was stranded in Africa and was unable to get a credit card to work.

“They’re getting more creative,” Ross said. “They’re actually linking names together. This was definitely a hoax, but (the scammer) had the name of a person that the victim actually does correspond with, so people have to be vigilant and ever on their toes.”

Trio of thieves caught on camera while breaking into Mount Vernon store

Maine State Police are asking the public’s help in identifying three people — two men and a woman — who broke into the Flying Pond Variety store on Pond Road in Mount Vernon and stole liquor and cigarettes.

The break-in occurred about 10 p.m. Thursday and left at least one perpetrator bloodied.

By mid-morning Friday, the owners of the store had posted on Facebook photos of the glass the intruders smashed to get into the store.

Police said the trio drove off in a silver sedan that had damage to the headlight area on the passenger’s side.

Trooper Jesse Duda, who responded to a report of the burglary, said, “Entry into the store was gained by breaking the window in the front door, likely with a hammer. One of the intruders has numerous cuts to his left arm and back and has a tattoo on his forearm ‘1976,’” according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Satefy.

The thieves stole four bottles of liquor and about a dozen packs of cigarettes. The alcohol stolen was Pinnacle and Popov vodka, Captain Morgan rum and Moonshine.

Anyone with information about the three is asked to call state police in Augusta at 800-452-4664 or 624-7076.

The same store was burglarized by an Oakland man in February 2013. In that instance, Douglas William Hanson broke into the store and fled with the cash register drawer. He was later sentenced for that and other crimes to five years in jail, with all but nine months suspended and two years of probation.

Man found unresponsive in Waterville apartment that was later robbed dies

WATERVILLE — A man found unresponsive early Saturday at Appleton Apartments on Hathaway Street died Wednesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was flown Saturday by LifeFlight helicopter.

“We do not have, and do not anticipate, receiving information about his cause of death,” Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey, of the Waterville police, said Friday. He said that because of the circumstances, the man’s name isn’t being released publicly.

Rumsey also said police don’t anticipate charges in relation to the man’s death “unless we receive additional information.”

Rumsey said Saturday that police were told at the scene the man may have suffered an overdose, but later information contradicted that.

The man, who is in his 40s and lives in the Waterville area, was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health on North Street and then to the Portland hospital after he was reported unresponsive at 12:32 a.m. Saturday.

He apparently had been visiting another man who rents the apartment.

The emergency call was the first in a tangled chain of events that led to the arrest of two women who had been in the apartment that night when emergency crews arrived and, police believe, returned later Saturday morning to steal drugs and money. The women took two knives from a butcher’s block and demanded drugs and money from a man who lives there, police said.

Laurie Philbrick, 41, of 24 Eastern Ave., was arrested Wednesday at her home and charged with class A felony robbery and class C felony criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. She was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta, where bail was set at $6,000.

Alison Thomas, 36, of 7 Hazelwood Ave., Apartment 3, was arrested Thursday morning at 7 King St. after police received a call at 12:55 a.m. about someone being in the caller’s basement. She was charged her with robbery and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.

Thomas and Philbrick are scheduled to appear April 25 in Kennebec County Superior Court.

The man who owns the apartment said Thomas and Philbrick held him at knifepoint Saturday morning while they searched the apartment for money and drugs, according to Rumsey. They did not find any, but took bags of clothes belonging to the man who was taken to the hospital, he said.

Rumsey said police suspect that there had been money and drugs in the Hathaway Street apartment as a result of illegal drug dealing and the women went there to try to steal them. Police are not releasing the identity of the renter who lives there.

No further information on the case was available Friday.

This story has been updated to clarify the circumstances regarding the man’s death.

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with breaking in to a store and stealing liquor and cigarettes in Mount Vernon Thursday night, authorities said Sunday.

Eric Clark, 19, of Vienna, and a 16-year-old Farmington boy were arrested at a home in Greene Saturday night and charged with burglary and other charges related to the break-in at the Flying Pond Variety store on Pond Road, according to a news release Sunday from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said the pair, who are alleged to have stolen four bottles of liquor and about a dozen packs of cigarettes, were charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and illegal transportation of liquor by a minor.

Clark was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta and the Farmington teen was brought to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in Portland, McCausland said.

Authorities have identified a third person allegedly involved in the burglary and are continuing to search for him. A teenage girl who was allegedly in the car during the burglary has also been identified, but no decision has been made whether she will face charges, McCausland said.

Maine State Police posted surveillance photos to its Facebook page and released the photos to the media Friday and received dozens of tips. McCausland said Clark and the minor boy were wearing the same clothes shown on the surveillance footage from the convenience store at the time of their arrest.

The trio allegedly entered the store by smashing the window in the front door at about 10 p.m. Thursday night. One of those arrested had numerous cuts on his forearm, according to trooper Jesse Duda, who responded to the initial report.
