SKOWHEGAN — A 19-year-old Skowhegan man was sentenced to 10 days in jail Monday after pleading guilty to burglary and theft committed a day earlier.

William McCarty Jr. was arrested Sunday after police found him rummaging through parked cars searching for items to steal, according to Skowhegan police Detective Sgt. Josh King.

King said Officer Timothy Williams was sent in response to a report of a suspicious person Sunday on Chestnut Street in Skowhegan. Williams was told that a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt was seen running and hiding in the area.

Williams spotted a vehicle with the dome light on, investigated, and found McCarty. McCarty was arrested on charges of burglary of a motor vehicle, violation of conditional release and theft. McCarty was found with change in his pocket, which was what he was stealing from cars, according to King. McCarty was arrested and taken to the Somerset County Jail in East Madison. He later pleaded guilty in court to burglary, theft and violation of the conditions of release.

“We are appreciative of the phone calls alerting us to the suspicious person and want to remind everyone to lock their doors,” King said.
