Trio indicted on charges stemming from February heroin bust in Palmyra

SKOWHEGAN — Three area people arrested in a February drug raid after the search of a Palmyra home have been indicted by a Somerset County grand jury.

Kevin A. Cookson, 56, of Newport; Melissa J. Collamore, 49, of Palmyra; and Eric E. Hamilton, 45, of Palmyra, are charged with aggravated trafficking and possession of scheduled drugs, according to the indictment, delivered by the grand jury on Tuesday. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Feb. 26 in Palmyra. At the time, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster called it one of the largest heroin seizures in the county in recent years.

Lancaster said at the time that the amount of heroin seized from the residence had a street value of up to $84,000. The drugs were seized after a search by Somerset County deputies of Collamore’s residence at 81 Ell Hill Road. Lancaster said the search turned up about 10 ounces of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, hashish, assorted controlled pills, drug-related paraphernalia, drug-related documentation and $1,090.

The seized heroin was the equivalent of about 2,800 bags, or individual doses, which are sold commonly for $25 to $40 per bag on the street, the release said.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but is an indication and enough evidence is present in a case to proceed with trial.
