An Old Orchard Beach man was arrested Wednesday and charged with sending a text saying he had planted a bomb in the Hannaford store in Saco.

Edward Medicke, 32, is charged with one count of terrorizing, a class C felony, Deputy Chief Jack L. Clements of the Saco Police Department said in a news release. No bombs were found.

The supermarket was evacuated after police were notified around 1:42 p.m. that a person had received a text message asking if anything had happened at the Hannaford.

“The person further texted that they had just put a bomb inside the Hannaford Supermarket in Saco,” Clement said in his statement. The person who received the text contacted Saco police.

Saco officers met with Hannaford management and managers of other stores in the shopping plaza on Route 1 and the stores were evacuated and closed as a precaution, Saco police said.

The Maine State Police sent two bomb detection dog teams to the plaza. The supermarket was cleared about 3 p.m.

The Saco Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division quickly identified Medicke as the suspect, Clements said.
