A Winthrop man faces a minimum 15-year prison term after being indicted on a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Jonathan W. Bowers, 28, is charged with having a Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol on April 9.

The indictment says he has three convictions each for burglary and theft from July 2006 and a burglary conviction from July 2010, all in Kennebec County Superior Court, which would make him ineligible to possess a firearm.

Bowers was arrested on the charge on Nov. 15 and pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.

The prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jody Mullis, has filed a motion to keep Bowers behind bars while the charge is pending.

A hearing on whether he should remain in custody is set for 11 a.m. Nov. 30 in U.S. District Court in Bangor. In the meantime, Bowers was ordered held.
