WATERVILLE — Jason Bard says he and his mother, Jill Bard, have owned Scotty’s Pizza for nearly 26 years, and Saturday night was the first time they’ve ever been robbed.
A suspect reportedly wearing a ski mask, gloves and a black hoodie came into the Water Street business around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday armed with a handgun, police said, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The store has eight surveillance cameras, but it’s hard to identify the suspect because he was covered up, Bard said. The suspect was also in and out very quickly, he said.
Jill Bard, 70, who co-owns the store with her son, was working that night, he said. She’s doing alright now and is “more pissed off than anything,” Bard said Tuesday.
“A lot of customers were mad that it happened, too,” he said in his store on Tuesday. He said a lot of their customers call Jill “Mom” because they’ve been coming to the store so long, so they were especially angry to hear that she was the one who got held up.
Bard doesn’t think the suspect was a local, or at least not a long-time resident. For local people, he said, “this is their store,” and some have been coming there since they were kids. He said the store has previously been burglarized after closing at night.
Police are still investigating the case and have asked that anyone with further information call Waterville Police at 680-4700 and ask for Detective Josh Woods.
